The Creative Force and Compassionate Heart Behind the Byron Boehm Dog Bandana

Byron Boehm is a disabled artist with Ehlers Danlos syndrome. He’s struggled with pain throughout his life and has found inspiration and relief through the creation of his artwork. Byron’s Story

Eight years ago, Byron Boehm took an art class on a whim and from that singular choice opportunity blossomed. He discovered that the act of creating helped him process and even lower his daily pain level. As someone living with Ehler’s Danlos syndrome, he experiences a number of health issues and painting has fostered a sense of healing in his life. 

Byron’s assistance dog, Winter, helps him navigate a challenging life. Winter has been outfitted with a dog hat and big dog clothes to help her look cute and fashionable while helping Byron in her daily duties. Byron’s great affection for Winter led Byron to reach out to BOIS The Label and so began our collaboration. Byron and Winter proudly have matching hats and Byron has a human hoodie from BOIS The Label.

Byron’s Healing Palette: From Pain to Painting 

Byron describes his art as happy which he finds surprising given that it is often crafted during moments of pain. It has become a coping skill that helps him process and remember how beautiful the world is and how he gets to be a part of that experience. He spends his time creating abstract art that’s reminiscent of his early childhood experience as a fisherman. 

“Art is my medicine, but if I can uplift someone with it, that’s all the better.” 

Many of his paintings are inspired by nature and landscapes in the Snowy Mountains where he grew up. He takes inspiration from river patterns to craft desert/indie art that sparks widespread appeal. With days that vary from very quiet and socially isolated to wild and jam-packed with action, Byron’s paintings mimic these experiences. 

Byron and Winter Give Back to the Community

In recent times, Byron has started taking his assistance dog, Winter, out into public and offering “free pets.” Winter, a 9-year-old, black lab provides Byron with support in his daily life and now he gets to share her wonder with the world. Byron and Winter hope to uplift others in offering free pats or a free hug. 

While inspiring others and sparking connection, Byron loves knowing that he was able to help even one person that needed it.

Byron and Winter have been met with widespread appeal in the public eye, further showing how small acts can help the world. He hopes to inspire others to do that same and connect with the world around them in a meaningful way.
