How to Choose the Best Dog Halloween Costumes This Season

Halloween is perhaps one of the most laidback holidays. You’re not expected to make a big dinner or join family or travel or do much of anything. You don’t even have to participate if you don’t want to. But if you do, all you’ve got to do is choose your costume.

And if you’re lucky enough, you’ve also got a four-legged companion that’s willing to participate in the fun with you. As a thoughtful dog-parent, you’re probably thinking about what makes sense for dog Halloween costumes and what doesn’t. Keep reading to see our thoughts and suggestions below.

Always Prioritize Your Dog’s Comfort

You might have the chillest cucumber of a dog, but you still want to think about their comfort. Consider how long your dog will be wearing the costume, how much they’ll be moving or playing. You’ll want to make sure their costume fits them well and it’s pulling or pressing on any part of their body.

If you’re just planning to do an adorable photoshoot, maybe you want to consider a couple of different dog Halloween costumes. However, if you’re going to a party or event, you probably want to focus on one that will stay on comfortably.

Think About the Temperature of Dog Clothes and Costumes

While the fit might be fire, you want to make sure your furbaby isn’t roasting in it. Research temperatures ahead of time and make sure you’re planning for the weather. If it’s on the chillier side and your dog doesn’t have much of a coat, you might want to consider a dog costume for Halloween that can have dog clothes underneath.

Layering is always a great option when it comes to fighting the cold. Windy beach bonfire? Add matching hoodies. Chilly lake party? Add a dog crewneck. Plan ahead so you have time to get the supplies you need to make sure both you and your dog have a great Halloween adventure.

Consider Keeping it Simple

Some dogs are not interested in entertaining our silly human ideas of fun. Fair enough, considering we’re not interested in digging up bones with them. If your dog is more interested in pets and cuddles, you might want to consider a simple one or two piece costume.

Our dog snoods can be a simple and adorable costume option that will have the added benefit of keeping your furbaby’s ears warm. You could get even simpler by grabbing one of our glow in the dark dog bandanas. Dog costumes for Halloween don’t have to be intricate to be absolutely adorable.

Know When to Take the Costume Off

If you’re planning to take your dog out in their Halloween costume, it’s important that you pay attention to their comfort level. If they start itching at their costume or fussing or even just plopping in a corner when they’re typically very engaged, it’s probably time for that costume to come off.

The most important part of a dog Halloween costumes is a good experience for everyone involved. Part of that means knowing when it’s time to take the costume off.
